Lessons from the Worm Moon

This week it’s all about what’s going on underground, what's unseen in the darkness. March’s full moon is called the Worm Moon, which refers to the movement under the earth that begins in the early spring. It’s a time when the frozen earth is melting and the worms are beginning to wriggle and move beneath the ground.

What else goes on under the ground? Plants have special cells at the bottom of their roots that act as anchors. They respond to gravity’s pull and figure out which way is down. Then they tell the rest of the plant’s cells to grow up and move in the direction of a light they can’t yet see.

In our own lives, when we’re in a season of darkness, when we feel lost or stuck, don’t we often wish for someone to show us the way toward the light? We wish we could be like that worm or tiny seedling that innately knows which way to go. Sometimes we get so lost in our season of darkness that we forget to look up—to look for the light.

In this episode of Midlife Meditations, (an excerpt from this week's Midlife Yoga class) I offer a 5-minute reflection combining the breath/movement practice of Tonglen with a mini-meditation on finding our way out of the darkness and into the light. Click here to enjoy this episode of Midlife Meditations.

If you'd like to experience breath/movement practices and quiet reflections like these, please join me for our weekly Midlife Yoga class, held every Wednesday at 9:00 AM on Zoom. To learn more and register, visit the class schedule webpage.

Until next time,

~ Rosemary
