“Yoga is the music of the soul.

So do continue, and the gates of the soul will open.”

~ BKS Iyengar

The author of this week’s quote, BKS Iyengar, was an Indian teacher of yoga and the founder of the style of yoga known as Iyengar Yoga. He was considered one of the foremost Yoga gurus in the world, and was pivotal in spreading and popularizing Hatha yoga in the West.

Iyengar invites us to view the music of yoga as a gate, an entryway into an unknown place of great significance. In this case, yoga represents the music of the soul, a practice that opens wide the gate to a deeper understanding of self.

In this week’s Take 5 Yoga video, we honor Iyengar by practicing Gate Pose (Parighasana). No other pose creates such an extended yet supported stretch along the entire side body. There’s also an ease and a grace about it that we can take away with us into life. It’s one of my very favorite poses. Won’t you join me on YouTube by clicking here?

Practice Gate pose and others like it by joining me for this Wednesday’s Midlife Yoga class. You can register by clicking right here.

Until next time,

~ Rosemary
