The Leak No Plumber Can Fix

Incontinence… over 25 million Americans report incidents of incontinence. Of these, over 75% are women. Of all the women reporting incontinence, 33% of them are over the age of 60. Why, then, was I so surprised when it happened to me?

Like a leaky faucet, incontinence can begin almost imperceptibly. A drip, initially so small it’s easy to ignore. But the drip means a normally tight seal isn’t holding anymore, so over time a drip becomes a leak. In this case, it will take more than any plumber’s tool to set things right.

Incontinence is often called a woman’s (or man’s) private journey. Why? Because many of us feel embarrassed that we cannot control the leakage or the urge. We feel isolated because the fear of not being near a bathroom causes some of us to stay home. We feel frustrated and confused, not only by the changes, but by how and where to turn for help.

My incontinence developed gradually. Of the two main types, stress incontinence (bladder leakage) and urgency (that “gotta go” feeling), I developed both. As a post-menopausal woman, the body changes associated with the loss of estrogen caused a thinning and weakening of parts of the pelvic floor.

I’ve decided to share my journey in the hope that others in the same situation will feel less alone. Although I’m not a doctor, my experiences with my doctors and my own research have helped me to feel less confused and more empowered.

I’m looking for a few courageous women or men who trust me enough to share your own story in a private conversation with me. Why? First, because connecting to others we feel less isolated and more supported. Second, it’s my goal to create a free webinar to share my story and empower others with the knowledge I’ve gained. I need your input to see if I’m on the right track and that the webinar contains helpful information.

We can set up a “coffee chat” over Zoom, just you and me, and you can tell me about your own journey, ask your questions, share your emotions and finally voice all that you’ve been reluctant to discuss with anyone else. I’ll listen and I’ll try to create something that will help you.

Sharing your challenges will empower you and ultimately offer help to countless others. If you’d like to talk, simply contact me.

Holding a safe space for you,

~ Rosemary
