Where Does the Time Go?

What was going on in 1972?

  • the Watergate scandal began
  • the last US ground troops withdrew from Vietnam
  • Cabaret and The Godfather were big winners at the Academy Awards
  • Alone Again Naturally was the #1 song
  • HBO became the first paid cable network
  • and a certain fresh-faced young girl graduated high school

Later today, I'll be gathering with some high school classmates to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our high school graduation. How is that even possible? But it's true, and looking through my yearbook this week, I'm reminiscing about my high school years.

My hairstyle? The shag was all the rage. Two friends and I hitchhiked to Greenwich Village in NYC (sounds crazy now, but the world was different then). We all got overpriced haircuts at Paul McGregor Salon, the place to go for the ultimate shag.

My prom date? That's Nicky, not my boyfriend, but the sweetest guy in the world. All these years later, we're still friends. Plus, he took me to see the aforementioned Godfather as our requisite post-prom date.

The uniform? I was a flag twirler, and the photo was taken on Thanksgiving morning, the last football game of my twirling career. I'm smiling as I remember that day and all the other fun I had with an amazing group of young girls.

Most Congenial? My photo from the Senior Poll. To be honest, at the time I needed to look up "congenial" in the dictionary (a pleasant personality... yep, I'd say that's me)

The loveliest part of all is that I'm still friends with many of the folks who graduated in the Class of '72. Though we may be looking back this weekend, we have the privilege of traveling through life today and in the years to come.

One of the best ways to travel back in time is through music. Kick up your heels and join me for these 2 YouTube Dance with Me videos.

What's a favorite memory from your high school days? Why not reach out to a long-time friend this week to say "Hi?"

Until next time,
