Why Your Neck Might Be Stiff (and What to Do about It)

As a yoga and wellness instructor, I see a lot of people with neck stiffness. It's a common problem, and there are a number of reasons why it's so prevalent today, including:

1. Poor Posture

One of the biggest causes of neck stiffness is poor posture. When we sit hunched over our computers or phones for long periods of time, we put a lot of strain on our neck muscles. This can lead to stiffness & pain.

2. Age

No surprise here. As we age, our muscles and joints naturally weaken. Weak muscles struggle to hold up the weight of our heads. This can also make us more susceptible to neck stiffness & pain.

2. Stress

Stress can also contribute to neck stiffness. When we're stressed, our muscles tense up, which can put pressure on our neck and shoulders. This can lead not only to tension & stiffness, but also headaches. When I'm stressed, my neck feels as tight as a drum!

In fact, a recent study by the University of California, San Francisco found that people who reported high levels of stress were more likely to experience neck pain.

How Gentle Neck Stretches Can Help

Gentle neck stretches can help to release stiffness and tension in the body and help relax the mind. Here are a few simple stretches that you can do at home:

  • Chin to chest stretch: Gently tuck your chin towards your chest. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly lift your head.

  • Ear to shoulder stretch: Gently tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear towards your shoulder. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly release. Repeat on the other side.

  • Rotating your head: Slowly rotate your head, looking first over your left shoulder, then gently rotating all the way to the right.

Want to give it a try? Join me for my latest Take 5 Yoga video, Release Neck Tension. In this sequence of gentle neck stretches, we move the head slowly & deliberately in all directions, allowing the muscles to open, lengthen & relax.
