Flamingos are some of the most beautiful, interesting and graceful birds in the world. Case in point:

  1. Flamingos are pink because of the food they eat. The shrimp and algae they consume contain carotenoids, which give them their distinctive color.
  2. Flamingos are very social birds. They live in large groups called flocks or "flamboyances." (I love that!)
  3. Flamingos can fly, but they don't do it very often. They prefer to walk or swim, and they can swim up to 35 miles an hour!
  4. Flamingos are very good parents. Both the male and female flamingo take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks.
  5. Flamingos can stand on one leg for hours at a time. But why bother?
  • One theory is that it helps them to conserve heat. When a flamingo stands on one leg, the other leg is tucked up into its feathers, which helps to keep it warm.
  • Another theory is that it helps them to stay balanced. Flamingos have very long legs and necks, and standing on one leg helps them to keep their center of gravity.

Whatever the reason, standing on one leg is a pretty impressive feat!If you're looking for a challenge, you can try this week’s Take 5 Yoga pose, Twisted Flamingo. it's a great way to improve your balance and coordination, and in this version, you’ll even strengthen your core!
