What Time Is the Right Time?

“It is not too late. You are not told old. You are right on time.”

~ Marianne Williamson

Maybe you've heard the naysayers, the ones that say yoga is for the young and pliable, that yoga is for those who haven't yet traded their restless energy for our rooted wisdom.

When it comes to yoga, maybe you feel like the window of opportunity has slammed shut, leaving you on the outside looking in. You, with your creaky knees and the map of life etched on your face, can't help but wonder: "Is it too late for me?"

But here's the thing: life isn't a race to the finish line, and the starting point is wherever you happen to be standing. Just like Grandma Moses, who didn't pick up a paintbrush until she was 78, it's never too late to bloom.

Let's talk about Laila, a student in my Gentle Beginnings Yoga class at the local community college. Laila started with me at age 93! Every week, her bright smile and positive energy filled the class. Granted, some poses needed to be modified, but together we explored what worked for her body. Not only that, Laila stayed afterwards to take the Senior Strength class that followed mine! What an inspiration!

Or what about Mary? Nearing 80, she had never tried yoga, and she was nervous that it would be too much for her. We spoke about the importance of honoring your body and going at your own pace. When Mary came back for week 2, she was beaming with pride. She had spoken to her 20-something grandson, an avid yoga student, and she was proud as a peacock to tell him, “Guess what? Your grannie is doing yoga!”

Think of your body as a well-worn book, one whose story is still not complete. Yes, there will be days when your knees protest and your balance wobbles. But yoga isn't about adding new, perfect chapters; it's about writing YOUR story… messy, imperfect & beautifully you.

Regardless of age, yoga is about listening to your body, exploring things gently & safely. It's about finding poses that feel like a warm hug. It's about breathing deeply, letting go of expectations, and simply being present in your own skin. How good does that sound?

You can find all that & more inside each Midlife Yoga class. As one Midlife Yogi says:

“I have been to many yoga classes over my life, but Rosemary offers poses that are unique and particularly helpful to me at this stage of my life.”
